At that point I decided this was not acceptable – I wanted more from life.  I wanted to live life on MY terms – and I decided it wouldn’t always be this way.   However I didn’t want another job because once the excitement of starting something new had worn off (even if I wasn’t travelling) I’d be in the same boat.   I’d always fancied running my own restaurant because as a waitress during university holidays I loved the interaction with people and ensuring guests had a wonderful dining experience.    However the start up costs were huge and when we looked at the numbers an extra 2 people coming in a week was the difference between a profit and a loss.  It was just too scary – we’d have had to sell our home, move to a big town, and who was I kidding that this would give me more time to spend with my son? 

So after months of research it was back to the drawing board. 

Then by “co-incidence”, I saw an advert for a business start-up show taking place the next day in Birmingham.  So my husband and I decided to make the 2 hour journey with our son (who was 2 at the time) and see what ideas we could pick up. 


And there, I heard a seminar led by the Better Business Institute and honestly –from that point onward my life changed.    I was introduced to Robert Kiosaki’s Cash Flow Quadrant, and decided I was going to be a business owner and be responsible for my own income and lifestyle. 

So I trained to become an accredited consultant with the Better Business Institute (BBI) and start my own marketing and sales consultancy - Business By Results.



I have to say my outlook on sales and marketing changed in just a few days.  Having worked as Sales and Marketing Manager for 7 years I thought I was an expert in marketing.  How wrong could I be – I learnt more in a few short days from the Better Business Institute than I had in the 7 years I was employed.  And you know I was SO relieved I hadn’t opened my restaurant because I didn’t have a clue how to market it.

It doesn’t matter what business you are in – you are first and foremost in the marketing business.  Because no matter how great your product or service is – if you cannot attract (and keep) new customers your business will not survive.
